Greg Lynn and Mark Goulthorpe discuss HypoSurface, a computer-controlled elastic surface that responds to sounds, movement, and network commands—and suggests a future where buildings can move and react.

HypoSurface began in 1998 and is still under development. Lynn and Goulthorpe consider its origins, its many influences, as well as how an international team including designers, mathematicians, and a composer worked together over multiple iterations of the project.

As part of a multiyear project that includes three exhibitions on twenty-five seminal projects, the CCA and Greg Lynn are publishing a series of digital publications recording conversations with key architects. The epubs are heavily illustrated with photos, drawings, renderings, videos, PDFs and interactive 3D models.
