Gijs Frieling: Vernacular painting
Gijs Frieling: Vernacular painting
Published by Valiz in 2009.
In the last few years Gijs Frieling has occupied a unique position in the world of painting. Frieling is inspired by different sources, among them folk art and Christian iconography. He tries to combine the things he loves into a grand unity and this evokes a feeling of inexhaustibility. As Frieling explains: 'My work is an attempt to present the development of painting as an entity in which the differences between fine art, folk art, religious painting, 'high art' and the avant-garde are merely contextual. Painting is visual knowledge, and at the same time an accumulation of actions. I want to give these reflective and performative aspects an equal place.' Vernacular Painting presents large mural paintings from the last fifteen years by Gijs Frieling (Amsterdam, 1966), together with a number of small paintings, pieces of embroidery and objects. The typography was drawn especially for the book by Job Wouters.
