Architect Myron Goldfinger spent seven years studying, photographing, and living in Mediterranean villages while preparing Villages in the Sun. In this book he presents, by means of analytical text and superb photographs, twenty-five villages in Greece, Italy, Corsica, Spain, Morocco, and Tunisia. While noting that differences in climate, site, materials, and traditions have resulted in typical local patterns of design, he also points out that all theses villages have certain common characteristics that make them demonstrably succesful as communities. These are a proper balance with the natural environment; a well-organized over-all plan; 'negative spaces' (streets, large and small squares, passageways) that express function, organize movement, and provide order, direction, and a sense place. Goldfinger discusses and illustrates the work of a number of contemporary architects who apply its lessons to the dsign of new buildings and communities.
